Tooth decay is a serious and dangerous dental issue that needs to be treated right away. If it’s not, there is a good chance it could spread and damage your entire tooth. If you can, it’s best to prevent tooth decay before it even begins. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Aram Cazazian, would like to tell you the causes of tooth decay so you understand a little more.

The first cause is poor oral hygiene. If you don’t brush, floss, and rinse regularly, plaque, sugar, acid, and other substances can attack the smile and promote tooth decay. Missing your six-month checkups can also promote tooth decay. The cleaning routine at your appointments can successfully remove the plaque from your smile, and if you fail to receive this treatment, your smile can be prone to cavities along with gum disease.

The second cause is eating tooth-harming foods. As you may already know, sugar promotes cavity development. Along with sugar, acidic foods and drinks can wear the tooth enamel down and give bacteria the chance to create a cavity.

The third cause is not receiving enough fluoride. Fluoride is a natural mineral that strengthens the tooth enamel and keeps it healthy. If you don’t expose your teeth to fluoride multiple times a day, the enamel won’t be strong enough to fight tooth decay.

If you keep up on oral hygiene, avoid tooth-harming foods, and expose your chompers to fluoride, there is a good chance you can prevent tooth decay development on your smile.
