Do you have pain in the area where your jaw meets your neck? Is this pain accompanied by immobility and a popping sound? If so, you may have temporomandibular pain or temporomandibular disorder. Also known as TMJ pain or TMJ disorder for short, these issues can cause the patient pain while eating or talking.

Issues like bad posture can cause TMJ pain. Bad posture puts a strain on the neck muscles, which in turn can cause the jaw muscles to become strained. An overworking of the temporomandibular joint can also lead to pain and inflammation. A person who clenches their jaw frequently or is subject to grinding their teeth is also at risk for developing TMJ disorder. Treatments are available for TMJ pain.

What treatment Dr. Aram Cazazian uses to help your TMJ pain will depend on how you developed it. Regular exercise will be needed to help in cases where body posture is causing the pain. If the patient is suffering from stress that is causing muscle strains in the jaw, practicing regular relaxation to relieve the stress will help. Your doctor may also prescribe a custom splint for the patient to wear at night to alleviate the pain.

TMJ pain that is caused by the teeth’s alignment will need orthodontic treatment, such as braces. Some cases of TMJ disorder will need surgery for treatment, but these cases are rare.
